Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight, and it's a good measure of your risk for diseases associated with being overweight. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk of metabolic syndromes such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes.
Although BMI is generally a good indicator of obesity for adults, it may overestimate body fat in professional athletes or others with a muscular build, and underestimate fat in the elderly or others who have lost muscle.
