UCSD ¡Más Fresco! Plus Foodcard FAQs

• 18 years of age or older
• Referred by a San Diego County community-based organization that has determined that you could benefit from increased access to and consumption of healthy foods, including fruits and vegetables
• One participant per household
• Live in San Diego County 

¡Más Fresco! Plus is different from the existing ¡Más Fresco! More Fresh Nutrition Incentive program in that it does not require you to be enrolled in CalFresh in order to receive benefits.

1. Receive a referral for enrollment from a San Diego County community-based organization. 
2. Enroll online at www.masfrescopluscard.org. 
3. If you need assistance with enrolling online, please contact ¡Más Fresco! Plus at 888-315-6602 or by email at masfrescoplus@health.ucsd.edu, and a ¡Más Fresco! Plus staff member will help you enroll in the program. 
4. Complete the online enrollment process.

Once you complete the online enrollment process, within 2-3 weeks of enrollment, you will receive your Foodsmart foodcard. 

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in two surveys – one after you complete enrollment and a follow-up survey 6-months following enrollment. These surveys will help us better understand how ¡Más Fresco! Plus may help participants access and eat healthy foods, including fruits and vegetables, to improve health. Each survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Participation in the surveys is voluntary.

Your Foodsmart foodcard will provide you with $50 a month for 12 months for the purchase of healthy foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, at participating grocery stores across San Diego County. A list of the participating grocery stores and eligible healthy foods can be found below. 

Your Foodsmart foodcard works like any debit card. Simply present your Foodsmart foodcard to the cashier at check out and the funds on your Foodsmart foodcard will be used to pay for eligible foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, up to $50 a month at participating grocery stores. If you don’t spend the full $50 in any given month, the unused funds will roll-over into the next month. Each month, for 12 months, $50 will be added to your Foodsmart foodcard. If you have unspent funds from the previous month, the $50 will be added to any unspent balance that rolled over from the previous month.

Step 1—Activate your Foodsmart foodcard

NOTE: In order to activate your Foodsmart foodcard you’ll need to provide the following information:

• Card number
• Activation code (your five digit zipcode)

Step 2—Set up your Member Portal 

• Contact Foodsmart Support at (415) 800-2311 for help setting up your Foodsmart foodcard Member Portal. 
• Once you’ve set up your Member Portal, you will have the ability to check your available card balance and transaction history.

Step 3—Shop for healthy foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables 

Visit a participating retailer and purchase eligible foods with your Foodsmart foodcard. 

Step 4—Check out

• The cashier will ring up your total groceries and tell you the total amount due.
• Present your Foodsmart foodcard before your other forms of payment to pay for your eligible grocery items.
• The cashier will process your Foodsmart foodcard payment.
• The eligible items will be covered by your available Foodsmart foodcard balance.

Step 5—Pay for the rest

You’ll need to use another payment method to purchase ineligible items or pay for any remaining balance for eligible food items that exceeds the balance on your Foodsmart foodcard.  

You can check your available Foodsmart foodcard balance and transaction history by calling Foodsmart Support at (415) 800-2311.

You may use your benefits to purchase eligible foods at participating grocery stores across San Diego County.  

You receive $50 a month each month for 12 months. Any unused funds will roll-over into the next month.

You’re responsible for paying any remaining amount for eligible food items that exceed your available benefit balance. You are also responsible for paying for any non-eligible items.

Your card number is the 19-digit number located on the front of your Foodsmart foodcard. 

You can update your account information by calling Foodsmart Support at (415) 800-2311.

If your card isn’t working, first make sure it’s active. Then, check to see that you have benefits available. If you requested a replacement card, you must use the new card sent to you in the mail. Your old card is deactivated once you activate the replacement. If you’re still having trouble, please call (415) 800-2311 to speak with Foodsmart Support.

If an item is not part of the eligible food list, then it will not be covered. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Foodsmart Support at (415) 800-2311 to speak with a representative who will be able to assist you. 

If your Foodsmart foodcard is lost, stolen, or damaged, you may request a replacement card by calling Foodsmart Support at (415) 800-2311. It may take up to 2-3 weeks for your new Foodsmart foodcard to arrive. 

Please call Foodsmart Support at (415) 800-2311 with any questions you may have about a previous transaction. 

All products purchased are subject to the retailer’s return/exchange policies. If the item meets the retailer’s return requirements, the amount of your approved purchase will be added back to your Foodsmart foodcard.

What are the eligible fresh fruits and vegetables?

A variety of healthy foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, qualify for purchase with your Foodsmart Foodcard, including: 

• • Any variety of fresh, whole, and cut fruits and vegetables
  • Bagged fruits and vegetables
  • Bagged or packaged salad mixtures
  • Garlic, onion, ginger, jalapenos, peppers, and chilies
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Frozen fruits and vegetables 
  • Nuts, seeds, beans, and legumes
  • Whole grains, such as oats, brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread
